I am somewhat heartened by the perceived mediocrity of his appointees thus far. For example, can a nullity like Hegseth master the vast complexity of the Pentagon to the point that he can drive change?
They promise shock and awe, and shock they can deliver. Awe may be harder as the reality of overcoming the inertia of 3 million federal employees hits them.
Perhaps one of our guardrails is the very presence of this workforce.
I am of two minds. On the one side I fear hoping in their mediocrity is hoping too much for too little. At the same time, I think it really matters. They are a mess because Trump and his ilk are clueless. Like you, I do believe in that workforce. I know our government is filled with people who are mission oriented and work on behalf of the good of the American people. They seek to save lives, solve problems and protect people from harm. Let's hope they hold Trump and Company accountable.
